| First American Casualty of World War II Memorial 4484 LA Hwy 1, Raceland, LA 70394 1-877-537-5800 or 985-537-5800 www.visitlafourche.com Lafourche Parish Tourist Commission Freddie John Falgout, a native of Raceland, was killed on the USS Augusta in 1937 while the ship was on the China Sea. A stray shell from a Japanese warship meant for the Chinese hit the USS Augusta killing Falgout instantly. Following exhaustive investigations, Freddie John Falgout was officially honored as the first casualty of World War II. The Congressional Record of October 15, 1987, certifies Freddie with this great honor.
A spendid display of this historic event, along with many of Falgout's and his family's personal pictures, can be seen at the Lafourche Visitor Welcome Center located at 4484 LA Hwy.1 in Raceland. The memorial is on the Visitor Center grounds. Freddie's tomb can be visited at the St. Mary's Nativity Church Cemetary, five miles north of the welcome center on LA Hwy. 1.

For two weeks prior to Mardi Gras Day, the Cajuns celebrate a wholesome, madcap experience enjoyed by all ages. Parades are held in several communities where groups of families and friends get together to eat, drink and enjoy the parades. Bar-b-q pits and crawfish boils line the parade routes where visitors are always welcome to join in the fun!
